Today, in front of a packed crowd at the Gympie Civic Centre, the winners of the 2019 Gympie Senior Citizen of the Year Awards were announced during the Annual Seniors Concert.

Held annually, the awards recognise a male and female, aged 60 and over, who have made a significant contribution in the past year to the Gympie region. Gympie Regional Council hosts the awards as part of Seniors Week, which runs from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 August.

The morning was officiated by Cr Mal Gear with the awards presented by Mayor Mick Curran and included musical performances by Sound Council and The Song Birds. This year’s winners are Barry Grainger and Lee Hodgson.

Barry is the President of the Mary Valley Show Society which is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and has been a volunteer for the organisation since 1969. Lee volunteers for a wide variety of community organisations which include Cooinda Nursing Home Ladies Auxiliary, Senior Citizens Hall Committee, The View Club, Community Association Curra, and Older Women’s.
