Wollongong City Council is reminding builders to tie down their materials on building sites across the city.

“Last month in West Dapto we saw what can happen when the winds arrive and items aren’t tied down,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“After those big winds we had Council staff and community service personnel out picking up a large volume of polystyrene pieces from roadsides and private properties for more than two weeks.

“Bits of ‘polystyrene pods’ used in the concrete slabs of homes were littered across new housing estates and properties across West Dapto and we don’t want to see that repeated. It’s not only an eyesore, it’s an environmental nightmare.’’

Since the incident, Council staff have met with a number of builders and suppliers to advise them of their responsibility to make sure building materials are securely tied down.

The suppliers of the polystyrene pods have committed to tie down with pegs when delivering and placing in waste bags after laying the concrete slabs.

“This is a first good step, but we need to ensure we all work together to keep our city clean and tidy,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“That’s why I encourage all residents to have a look around their homes and gardens and tidy up or secure any loose items. We know August is a time we get big winds in our City – and if we all work together we can minimise their impact.’’

Cr Bradbery also reminded people to tie up bags of household waste before putting them in the red-topped bins.

“No-one likes to wake up on bin day to see the rubbish blown up and down their street. Securing bin bags before they go into the bin is an easy way to keep household waste where it should be.’’
