Barclay Square pathway project to improve safety and visual amenity

Council is about to embark on a new project designed to make Red Cliffs’ popular Barclay Square both safer and more attractive.

Work will start on Monday 5 August to replace the paved footpath that snakes its way through Barclay Square.

Councillor for Environment and Farming Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said the project will involve removing the existing, ageing paved pathways and replacing them with new durable pebblecrete paths.

“Due to the movement of soil, regular heavy traffic related to the popular markets held there and the age of the existing pavers, they’ve simply reached the end of their life and now threaten to pose a tripping hazard to residents,” Cr Cirillo said.

As part of the works, sections of the new pathways will be constructed to industrial standards to ensure they can cope with both maintenance vehicles and heavy vehicle traffic within the park.

Trees near the construction works will be protected at all times and any turf affected by the works will be reinstated as well as reshaping of areas along the edges of the pathways.

Cr Cirillo said the works were scheduled to cause the minimum disruption possible to regular user groups of Barclay Square.

“Barclay Square is a focal point for the thriving Red Cliffs community, used for numerous successful events throughout the year, including Carols by Candlelight and the numerous weekend markets.

“By completing these necessary works, we’re ensuring it can be enjoyed for decades to come.”
