Street renaming to reflect sustainable focus

“What's in a name?” Juliet asks her lover Romeo in one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.

In the play, Juliet suggests that a name should not matter.

But while that might be true in a Shakespearean tragedy, street names on the other hand can be important, especially in creating a positive identity.

Cairns Regional Council is looking for a new name for Waste Street near the Portsmith Transfer Station.

Council is wants a more “sustainable” title in line with its Waste Reduction and Recycling Strategy.

And the Cairns community will be able to have its say on via an online poll.

“With waste increasingly seen as a ‘resource’ rather than rubbish, Council is looking for a name that reflects and promotes messages of recycling and re-use,” Acting Mayor Terry James said.

It is planned for the new name to be officially unveiled at ceremony in November as part of Recycling Week 2019 activities.
