Winner Announced For All Connections To Unley Art Prize

A collection of 21 artworks, including the winning piece was presented on Friday 7 June 2019 in the Hughes Gallery, Fullarton.   The prize, run for the first time in 2016, is open to artists at all career stages and working in all mediums.   The judging panel comprised of Alice Clanachan of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Peter Hughes, Councillor for Fullarton Ward and Matthew Ives, City of Unley’s Cultural Development Officer, selected the winner from the finalists exhibited at the Hughes Gallery.    Judge Alice Clanachan said she is was impressed with the quality of works submitted in 2019.   “I am excited to be involved in the All Connections to Unley Art Prize. As a local Forestville resident, I have long-admired Council’s commitment to arts and culture, particularly through public art and exhibitions,” Ms Clanachan said.   “For the prize, myself and other members of the judging panel had the challenging task of selecting finalists and the winner. I was thrilled to see so many strong works from a range of media in the mix.”   The City of Unley invited South Australian artists, of all ages and career stages, to create artworks for entry to the All Connections to Unley Art Prize. 

Mayor Michael Hewitson said it is important to continue to provide avenues for art to be produced and seen in Unley.   “Art is an important medium to capture our beautiful city and the intent of the prize is to encourage artists from all over South Australia to visit Unley and capture their own connection to it.” Mayor Hewitson said.   In addition to the major prize, an Elected Members Choice Award of $500 will be chosen by the City of Unley's Elected Members. This award will be announced at the end of the exhibition.   Emma Young’s piece, ‘Park Pair’, will be reproduced as posters on public bins and limited-edition bin stickers will be available to City of Unley residents.   The free exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm at the Hughes Gallery, Fullarton.   For more information, please visit www.unley.sa.gov.au/art-prize
