City to Acknowledge National Reconciliation Week
City of Rockingham 21 May 2019

National Reconciliation Week is held annually and offers an opportunity for all Australians to learn about the nation’s Aboriginal history, cultures and achievements, and to explore the ways that the community can achieve reconciliation together. It is held in late May and early June as the dates mark the anniversaries of the historic 1967 Referendum and the landmark Mabo decision in 1992.   The theme for 2019 is Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage. This theme highlights that at the heart of reconciliation, is the relationship between the broader Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This relationship, if it is to prosper, must be grounded on a foundation of truth.

As part of the City’s recognition of National Reconciliation Week, banners will be displayed on Central Promenade in Rockingham for the entire week. The banners are part of a project coordinated by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries that will feature over 415 banners displayed across WA, featuring the work of Aboriginal artist Ms Valmayi Nampitjinpa.

From Saturday 25 May to Saturday 1 June the City will also display the Rockingham Nyoongar Stories Exhibition at Rockingham Central Library.

The exhibition will celebrate and share the outcomes that have been accomplished through a project that seeks to connect the community with the stories and voices of Nyoongar people who are connected to Rockingham.
