Enjoy your time, but be aware of liquor laws

Gannawarra Shire Council residents and visitors to the area are encouraged to enjoy their time in the Shire during the Easter long weekend, but be aware of Council’s liquor laws.

With events during the long weekend attracting people to the Gannawarra’s larger towns, Council is reminding those who choose to consume alcohol to abide by Council’s Local Laws.

“Council recently successfully prosecuted two people who were found to be consuming alcohol in alcohol free zones. These people were both penalised $750 through fines and court costs,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

Alcohol free zones are in place throughout the Cohuna and Kerang central business areas. This means that people cannot have in their possession open cans or bottles of alcohol.

Residents and visitors are also reminded that they cannot consume or have in their possession open cans or bottles of alcohol in public places, roads or reserves in any of Council’s township areas between 10pm and 8am.

“Although Council encourages residents to celebrate the Easter long weekend, and any other milestones during the year, it is important to remember that laws are in place to ensure the safety of others,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Information regarding Council’s Local Laws are available by visiting www.gsc.vic.gov.au, phoning (03) 5450 9333 or visiting one of Council’s Customer Service Centres, located at Cohuna and Kerang.
