Locals are invited to highlight the tireless work of local volunteers by nominating them in the upcoming Broken Hill Community Volunteer Awards.

Nominations are now open for the Awards, which recognise outstanding volunteers, groups and organisations that give their time to improve Broken Hill and the lives of its residents.

Nominees must be current or recently retired volunteers, or not-for-profit organisations or groups Awards will be presented at the Celebration of Volunteering, during National Volunteers Week which runs 20-26 May 2019.

Volunteer organisations that are in Council’s Volunteer Database will be sent information about how to register attendance at the event in the coming weeks.

If you are unsure about how current your organisations details are, contact Council’s Events Team at [email protected] or 8080 3322 before 5 May to avoid missing out.

Volunteer Working Group Chair, Councillor Marion Browne, said it was important to recognise the efforts of the city's many volunteers.

"Volunteers contribute so much to our city and our way of life, and the awards are a great way for the community to show their appreciation," said Cr Browne.

"Volunteers will rarely seek the limelight however, so it's important that locals step up to nominate a hard-working volunteer or group to ensure they get the recognition they deserve.”

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

• Community

• Cultural

• Environment

• Event

• Health and Social Services

• Manager / Supervisor

• Tourism

• Sporting

• Youth

• Emergency Services

• People’s Choice

The winner of the prestigious Hall of Fame Nydia Eades Award will also be selected from this group. Nydia Eades was the city's first female Councillor, and a Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal recipient who worked tirelessly throughout her life for the improvement of women's conditions.

Nomination forms can be found online at https://bit.ly/2IyRl5I, and hard copies are also available from Council’s Administrative Centre, Broken Hill City Library, or the Visitor Information Centre during business hours.

All nominations are to be received by 5pm (ACST) on May 5.
