The SMS Emden was a 1914 ship described by official German archives as ‘wanting to disturb the British supply lines like a wolf breaking into the sheepfold’.

The story of the SMS Emden is the premise behind the new book from author Wes Olson titled The Last Cruise of a German Raider, The Destruction of SMS Emden. It is a tale of a German Raider that wreaked havoc in the Indian Ocean in 1914, quickly becoming the scourge of the Allied navies.

The Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum is hosting a free author talk with Wes Olson with a book signing taking place at The Forts Store immediately after the talk.

Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum Curator David Theodore said hosting Wes Olson at the Fortress will provide audiences with insight into his knowledge and experience of Australia’s military history.

“The story of SMS Emden shows us that the threat she posed led to a particularly heavy escort of four warships being allocated to the first Australia and New Zealand troop convoy that left Albany on the 1st of November,” Mr Theodore said.

The Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum will host the Wes Olson author talk on Wednesday the 24th of April at 10:30am – 11:30am.
