Childrens Authors visit Cessnock Schools as part of the Newcastle Writers Festival

Last week, well over a thousand children in the Cessnock Local Government Area were lucky enough to meet and listen to acclaimed children’s authors Matt Stanton, Katrina Nannestad and Oliver Phommavanh as part of the Newcastle Writers Festival Program.

Matt, Katrina and Oliver enthralled children from Kurri Kurri, Stanford Merthyr, Mulbring, Weston, Cessnock West, St. Patricks, Bellbird, Paxton, Ellalong, St. Phillips, Nulkaba, Cessnock East, Cessnock Public, Kearsley, Kitchener, Rosary Park and Greta Primary Schools and Holy Spirit Infants School.

Matt Stanton spoke about how your imagination is your superpower. Katrina Nannestad shared her passion for playing with words and revealed the inspiration behind her colourful settings and the quirky characters that inhabit them. Oliver Phommavanh presented ‘Natural Born Loser’: a hilarious exploration of being a little bit weird or nerdy and his inspiration for writing his latest book, as well as his other classic titles like Thai-riffic and Con-nerd.

Library Services Co-ordinator, Rose-marie Walters said “this is the second year Cessnock City Library has partnered with Newcastle Writers Festival. The Newcastle Writers Festival Schools Program is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with their favourite authors and be inspired in a fun, educational, interactive and memorable way.”
