Mayor's Message - 26 March 2019

Published on 26 March 2019

After having reclaimed the lane in recent years, the city’s young people are now moving on to Embrace the Place on Friday 12 April from 3 pm until 5 pm.

Devonport’s premier Youth Week event is moving this year to Providore Place.

And while the name and location have changed, the event will be very similar to previous years with the same youth arts and live music in a bigger, brand new setting.

There will also be local service providers on hand, free pizza slices and more

The free community event is presented by Youth, Family & Community Connections, Devonport City Council & Devonport Regional Gallery with support from the Tasmanian Government.

Entries are certainly beginning to roll in for the Distinctly Devonport photographic competition, which was launched last week.

Council is calling on budding shutterbugs to grab their cameras and begin taking pictures in and around the municipality for the chance to win prizes in the 2019 Distinctly Devonport photographic competition.

Photographers have until Monday 15 April at 5 p.m. to submit their shots in the categories of:

Devonport Active Outside – images taken at Devonport’s regional sports facilities and/sporting events Devonport Nightscape – images taken at night in Devonport Devonport foreshore and coastline – images of the Devonport foreshore and coastline Distinctly Devonport – images depicting Distinctly Devonport sites, landmarks \or the beautiful landscape in/or around Devonport (i.e.: Don, Spreyton, East Devonport etc) Devonport CBD & Retail Spaces – images taken in Devonport's retail spaces and; Devonport in the Gloaming – images representing Devonport in Tasmania’s distinct afternoon/early evening glow

From Thursday 18 April until Monday 13 May the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite photograph with the overall People’s Choice winner receiving a $150 voucher.

An artist judged winning photograph will also win a $150 voucher with the public voted category winners each receiving $50 vouchers.

Winners will be announced on Monday 3 June 2019.

Time and again I have seen some wonderful images of our municipality taken and this is a great opportunity for people to show off the parts of Devonport and its surrounds which particularly appeal to them.

More information about the competition, including the conditions of entry, can be found on the Council’s website at http://www.devonport.tas.gov.au/Events-Activities/2019-Distinctly-Devonport
