Thanks to the efforts of Mr Gerry Coleman, the Pillar Box located on the corner of Surrey Street and North Road, Bassendean, was recently included on the State Heritage Register on 22 February 2019.

Manufactured in the United Kingdom in 1876 and displaying the royal cipher VR for the reigning monarch at the time –Victoria Regina, the Pillar Box is an important object in Western Australia’s postal history. Still in use today and cleared daily by Australia Post, the post box is an item of original Victorian street furniture and represents the early colonial postal service. Significantly, it is one of the earliest extant examples of a cast iron pillarbox in Western Australia.

Mr Gerry Coleman nominated the Pillar Box  for inclusion in the State Heritage Register in 2015 and after rigorous assessment process other red pillar boxes also received heritage protection.Historical information and evidence obtained by the Local Studies Librarian was submitted to support the application and address the assessment criteria.

Other places in the Town of Bassendean on the State Heritage Register include:

Bassendean Oval Earlsferry House 1902 Guildford Road Bridge 1937 Success Hill Lodge (originally the Lockridge Hotel) 1898 Bassendean Fire Station 1934 Bassendean Masonic Lodge 1934 Pensioner Guard Cottage 1856 (also on the National Estate)
