Meandarra Waste and Recycling Centre benefiting Western Downs contractor

Western Downs Regional Council is continuing to make investments in the region, with a Western Downs contractor already working on a new Waste and Recycling Centre at Meandarra.

The new Waste and Recycling Centre will be similar to transfer stations Council has built at Kogan, Condamine and Kaimkillenbun and will replace the old Meandarra Landfill as a safer, more modern facility for residents to dispose of their waste.

The new transfer station is expected to receive up to 500 tonnes of waste per year

Council Spokesperson for Planning and Environment Councillor Andrew Smith said he was glad the new transfer station was already benefiting the Western Downs community.

“Council is proud to invest in our region’s contractors to complete our region’s work and Taylor Quality Constructions are already doing such a great job on this project,” he said.

“On top of benefiting Western Downs contractors, this modern facility will provide the Meandarra and greater Western Downs community with cleaner, greener, value for money waste management services.

“With economic, environmental and liveability benefits, the Meandarra Waste and Recycling Centre will be a great project for the entire community.”

Taylor Quality Constructions, a company based in Chinchilla, started work on the site in late January.

Owner Steve Taylor said it was a great job for the company and he was glad the community would benefit.

“Being a local company, we employ three men plus myself, which is money we then get to spend back in the town.

“It’s a relatively small job but it’s a very good job for us and the community.”

The Western Downs region produces an average of 30,000 tonnes of waste per year, which either goes directly into landfill or is processed at one of Council’s Waste and Recycling Centres.

The old Meandarra Landfill will be rehabilitated once the new transfer station is completed by June 2019.
