A winning sausage from Western Downs Regional Council’s 2019 Flavour It Your Way competition could soon become a Queensland Regional Sausage King.

Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods submitted three customer-created sausage flavours to Council’s Australia Day competition and took out the town’s winning title with a Pork, Hazelnut and Sweet Chilli snag.

Now, the delicious flavour created by 13-year-old customer Deeka Rose will delight tastebuds at the Australian Meat Industry Council’s (AMIC) Outback Region Sausage King Competition.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said it was fabulous to see the small business backing its customers and showing such community pride.

“The 2019 Flavour It Your Way competition was a great event for the Miles community and I’m so glad to see the celebrations could continue with this winning snag,” she said.

“I loved Deeka’s winning sausage flavour of Pork, Hazelnut and Chilli on Australia Day and I’m so excited the rest of the Outback Region will get the chance to taste it too.

“It’s fantastic to see such community pride from the team at Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods and I wish them success in the competition.”

Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods owners Lyn and Daryl Bein said they were looking forward to taking the winning snag to the Outback Region competition in the coming months and hoped to make it through to the Queensland finals of the Sausage King Competition.

“There were so many entries in the Flavour It Your Way competition and it was a tough decision to narrow 45 entries down to just three,” Ms Bein said.

“The Pork, Hazelnut and Chilli sausage was a really nice sausage — it certainly had flavour! We had tourists coming down to the shop on the Saturday morning after the competition to ask for more.

“And the young person who came up with it is only 13 and apparently she watches all the cooking shows.”

The AMIC Outback Region Competition, to be held on 7 July 2019, is the largest of nine across the state. Selected winners of each regional competition will then go on to compete in the Queensland Titles later this year.
