Ipswich Libraries takes celebration of Indigenous culture to the suburbs

08 February 2019

CELEBRATING Indigenous language and culture will be the order of the day when Ipswich Libraries takes a popular children’s program out to the community this February and March.

The Indigenous Insights: Gudyiwagagirri Song & Dance series hosted by Aunty Sharron Lindh will make its first stop at Riverview Community Centre on 12 February.

Events are also planned for Bundamba, Leichhardt, Rosewood and Camira.

Indigenous Insights is an opportunity for children up to eight years old, with a parent or carer, to learn about and celebrate Indigenous culture and languages through music, dance and stories.

“Teaching children about Indigenous culture and language in a fun, musical way with Aunty Sharron has been a huge success,” Library Services Manager Sylvia Swalling said.

“Indigenous Insights was first held at Ipswich Libraries as a single event to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day in August 2017.

“It morphed into two events held at Ipswich Libraries in 2018 and now it is a series of five events that we are taking out of the physical library space and into the community.”

Aunty Sharron is a local Indigenous educator and musician. She has previously featured in a Queensland Government Early Years Count television campaign with individuals and groups from Indigenous communities across the state.
