Cambridge Council Adopts Heritage List and Local Government Inventory

Published on 30 November 2018

The Local Government Inventory (LGI) and the Town's first Heritage List were unanimously adopted by the Town of Cambridge Council at its meeting held on Tuesday, 27 November 2018.

The LGI provides a record of the history and development of the local area as required under the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990.

A total of 118 places, as well as additional historical information and maps, were included in the LGI which replaces the Town's 1997 Inventory. A total of 74 places from the LGI were also adopted on the Heritage List under Town Planning Scheme No. 1.

These places are afforded a level of protection under the Scheme, though many possibilities exist for development and adaptive reuse of these places. Mayor Keri Shannon said that the review and adoption of the documents is an important achievement for the Town.

"Recognising and preserving local heritage is an important consideration in many planning matters within the Town," Mayor Shannon said.

"Council is committed to working with owners to preserve heritage places for current and future generations."

Council also adopted a range of planning measures to support the conservation and management of heritage listed places. Including support to implement grant funding for owners who undertake conservation works to heritage listed places.

The Heritage List and Local Government Inventory are available to view on the Town's website and at the Town of Cambridge Administration Building.
