If your recycling bin is bursting at the seams after the festive season, Council’s free recyclables drop off day could be just what you need.
The annual event, which is celebrating its 10th year, is held on the first Saturday after New Year’s Day.
The next event will be held on Saturday 5 January 2019 at the Leumeah Railway Station Car Park, Plough Inn Rd, on the Woodbine side of the station, from 8am to 3pm.
Residents can bring along any recyclables they would normally place into their yellow-lid recycling bin at home and drop them off for recycling free of charge.
Polystyrene, which usually goes into the general waste bin, will also be accepted on the day because it is a common waste item during the festive season.
The polystyrene collected on the day will be sent to a specialised company for recycling, diverting additional waste from landfill and saving critical space in general waste bins.
Mayor George Brticevic encouraged residents to take advantage of the free service to properly dispose of their extra recyclables in a quick and easy way.
“By utilising this service, residents can save their all-important bin space, while ensuring that recyclables and polystyrene will not end up as landfill,’’ Cr Brticevic said.
“With landfill capacity across the Sydney Metropolitan region rapidly diminishing, reducing waste to landfill has never been more important.’’
To get in and out on the day as quickly as possible, residents are reminded to separate their polystyrene from their recyclables before coming to the event.
Residents are also reminded to not bring their recycling bin to the event.
Only household quantities of recyclables and polystyrene will be accepted. General waste and garden organics will not be accepted.
