On November 1, 2018, Queensland’s Containers for Change refund scheme will launch across the state.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett is proud to be a part of the initiative to reduce the amount of beverage container litter within the region.

“As a region, we pride ourselves on making sure we are doing our bit for the environment,” Councillor Burnett said.

“As a council we strongly believe in supporting our residents to recycle at every opportunity.

“We have a more concentrated focus on recycling due to the impact waste products have on the Great Barrier Reef and sea life.”

Cr Burnett said this is a great opportunity for the community to get a return on eligible containers, instead of these being thrown in the bin.

“Our hope is the initiative will impact public awareness around the eligibility of recyclable items,” Cr Burnett said.

In 2012 Gladstone Regional Council had three motions carried at the 116th Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) annual conference in Brisbane.

Council’s third motion, co-sponsored by Burke Shire Council, concerned the introduction of a container refund scheme.
