The Gippsland Regional Sporting Complex in Sale is getting a $835,000 flooring upgrade thanks to $500,000 of funding from the John Leslie Foundation and $335,000 from Wellington Shire Council.

The upgrade of the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex stadium floor will result in the current synthetic playing surface on the four indoor sports courts being replaced with a sprung timber sports floor.

When the original playing surface was selected the focus was on enabling multi-purpose, multi-use activity. While the synthetic surface has been satisfactory for the broad range of activities currently conducted at the centre, it does fall below the design standard specified for high level basketball competition. The new flooring will be rated to a minimum of International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Level 2 certification.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Carolyn Crossley says, “We are delighted that the John Leslie Foundation has considered this project to be of significant importance to the local community and have confirmed their support to assist fund the floor renewal.”

“John Leslie was a great patron of the GRSC and his legacy lives on through the good work and generosity of the John Leslie Foundation.

“Replacement of the current surface will enable the facility to host senior level competition and training by Basketball Victoria, local associations and clubs. This will add to the facility’s ability to attract higher levels of activity and higher levels of player calibre. It will also attract more visitors to our beautiful region.”

Council will ensure that the user groups are kept informed of the project’s progress and works will be scheduled to provide minimum disruption where possible.

The project is in the very early stages of planning and is due for completion in the next 12 months.
