Southern Midlands Council’s ‘Artist in Residence’ program

The Southern Midlands Council’s ‘Artist in Residence’ program, in partnership with Arts Tasmania, has been running since 2015 and aims to bring artists from diverse backgrounds to discover the landscapes and people of the TasmanianMidlands, which are then reflected through their work. Our artists are provided with living quarters at the Oatlands Gaoler’s Residence and given access to some of our iconic heritage buildings, as well as support to exhibit   their works locally.

Our most recent residency was undertaken by artist Henrietta Manning who has produced a fine body of work based on the local landscapes and historic buildings of Oatlands. Henrietta has since held a very successful "open day" for the community at the Gaoler's residence and has had her work exhibited twice in galleries at Salamanca.

The SMC has proudly sponsored the production of a high quality 16 page booklet depicting some of Henrietta's Oatlands-based works. These booklets are for sale and available from the Kempton and Oatlands Council Offices for $10 each. All proceeds from the sale of these books with provide similar assistance to future artists who are undertaking our residency to ensure that their work remains assessable to the broader community.
